Walk & Roll Wednesdays
"Walk and Roll Wednesday" is a fun program for families. As well as being a great social event, it helps reduce congestion and carbon emissions around the school and promotes healthy activities. Each Wednesday starting within September, students who walk and roll at least part-way to school are entered into a prize raffle and classroom competition. Raffle winners are awarded with fabulous prizes in an end of the year drawing. Last year's winners received scooters and bike equipment from sponsoring shops. Each week, classrooms compete to win the chance to display the much coveted Golden Boot Award.
Dozens of students and families enjoy walking, biking and scootering to school together each day but we want to make Wendesday a special opportunity for all Sunnyside students. Families living further afield can participate by parking and walking at least 4 blocks to school, or by taking public transit. Volunteers organize a "walking school bus" which escorts kids from Sunnyside Park to Sunnyside Elementary. Kids can be dropped off between 8:15 and 8:30 at Sunnyside Park to join the walking school bus. Boys and girls from all grades are welcome and encouraged to join. Sunnyside is one of a select number of recipients of a Safe Routes to Schools grant. We actively promoting alternate methods of transportation to the school, including carpooling, walking and biking. SFUSD Green Schools Program
In 2009 Sunnyside Elementary was chosen as a pilot site for this cutting-edge partnership with the SFUSD Department of Sustainability and the City and County of San Francisco Office of the Environment. The initiative focuses on teaching students and faculty ecoliteracy through actively participating in reducing energy and water use; decreasing the waste stream through composting and recycling; promoting alternative transportation and traffic reduction; using non-toxic products on-site; and maintaining an organic school garden. |
