Sunnyside offers a variety of fee-based Enrichment Programs after school to add to your child's education, development, and fun. Children enrolled in the after-care programs may also participate in these Enrichment Programs for an additional fee. Little Sunshine Art Club

This fun and engaging class builds art skills, awareness, enthusiasm, individual expression and much more. Within a framework of support young students are encouraged to grow artistically. We work on both short and long range projects that encompass a wide variety of materials and techniques. 
Fall rate: $140

Exploring Math Through Art, Grades K-1

The club will explore project-based (rather than skill-based) learning focusing on problem solving, estimation, measurement, and geometry. Using the Arts, as our vehicle, each week we will explore a different Common Core (mathematical) standard, through real life applications such as, art making, cooking, music, engineering and much more. There will be an inherent emphasis on building problem solving and critical thinking skills.  Math concepts will be infused into art projects at age level appropriateness.

Exploring Math Through Technology Grades 2-5

Using computer programs such as Scratch, Hopscotch, Code.org, Geometer’s Sketchpad, and NCTM’s illuminations, this club focuses on building problem solving, critical thinking, and programming skills.  Projects will be differentiated to challenge each student’s current math and programming ability.   The cost will be $100 for the Fall session, and all proceeds (after materials) will be donated directly to the Sunnyside PTA.
Rhiana holds a masters in secondary math education, and has taught everything from 6th grade math through pre-calculus. She currently focuses on making math relevant to the younger grades and is the Sunnyside Math Specialist.

Garden Club is for students who want to challenge and enhance their gardening skills. Students should be curious, creative, and enthusiastic gardeners who want to build and maintain a garden community. Curriculum will grow from the ideas and interest of its members.

Piano with Keyboard Educators offers a complete piano course to all children grades Kindergarten thru 5th grade. Children learn to play the piano one on one and also learn theory as well a learning to read music and write music.

Sunnyside's Sports, Health & Fitness Class is specifically designed to encourage lifetime habits of being physically active and having lots of fun while doing it.  Our athletes will learn a new sport every two weeks, including Basketball, Tennis, Lacrosse, Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, Baseball, etc. Our focus is to educate our athletes on anatomy, physiology and nutrition in a fun and interesting way.  All classes are taught by a Certified Personal Trainer.

Join us for a hands-on curriculum of music and movement, crafts, games, cooking, science, cultural adventures, and more. The afterschool Mandarin program provides a warm and relaxed learning experience. Our teachers facilitate the children’s learning through Chinese art, songs, games, stories, and other age-appropriate activities. Students are grouped according to grade and language proficiency and learn Mandarin just as they learn English—by living it. These classes will be taught entirely in Mandarin.

Sprouts' guest chefs are thrilled to share their love for wholesome food and hands-on cooking. Students will do everything themselves, from prep work ​and​ cooking to enjoying the recipe they created. All of our menus are determined by the season's best, using Capay Valley produce to make dishes such as​ Italian ravioli and ​tortellini, North African tajines,​ Greek phyllo​ wraps, French ratatouille, ​and Spanish ​tapas! Your child will learn the basics of cooking at home, discover the flavors and cultures of new recipes, and gain confidence to cook for family and friends.

We bring our team of instructors, chess books, prizes, and years of experience to your campus each week for this 1-hour chess club. Kids learn chess strategies and chess openings, and solve chess diagrams and puzzles. Each class consists of 30 minutes of chess lesson and 30 minutes of playing time.

Our programs prepare students for rigorous study and self-driven exploration by introducing them to heady concepts in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics through interactive experimentation. We’ve designed our curriculum around the field of engineers and scientists, allowing students to tackle challenges using an understanding of concepts but leaving ample room for their individual creativity. LEGO Robotics Program is designed to introduce students to both robot building as well as programming. The students will build robots to accomplish a specific task while using their imagination to make and design their robots. Students will discover the Engineering Design Process in a real world setting as they test their robots multiple times. 

Ukulele  Grades K-2

With open chord tuning and four strings, the ukulele classes are accessible and fun for all new K-1 students. Students learn chords, rhythm, songs, and melodies. Games and activities are a regular part of class. Students learn a little bit at a time, then practice it at speed until they are comfortable with it, and then move on. If your child doesn’t own an instrument, a ukulele can be rented for a $15 small fee available for the entire school year. Guitar  Grades 2-5

The age-appropriate Curriculum includes chord strumming, string picking, and rhythmic playing.  In the Guitar Classes, students learn the fundamentals of understanding music through popular songs and hands-on experience playing the guitar. Students gain the knowledge they need to perform their favorite pop, rock, and folk songs. They will also gain the strongest of foundations to lead the way for further musical exploration.
Class time incorporates musical games, focused practice, and ensemble work to play songs together as a group. If your child doesn’t own an instrument, a guitar can be rented for a $25 small fee available for the entire school year. Singing Grades 2-5

Students gain basic ear training skills for music. Starting with a focus on understanding rhythm and how to sing rhythmic syllables. Students then focus on melody and pitch, learning the notes of major scales. Along with ear training for music, students will participate in singing games and practice singing actual songs that they will perform.

Club Jam is an introductory music course incorporating both singing and percussion. Students participate in simple and engaging music games and activities as well as singing songs as a class and getting an introduction to rhythm. This class builds a musical foundation to sharpen students' minds, paving the way for further academic study in music and elsewhere. Hand drums and percussive instruments are provided.

In this class, students study the essential elements of how to illustrate and create their own comics. Class time includes the study and practice of basic drawing techniques, character design, story boarding, scripting, and paneling. Build engineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes, and motorized cars, and use special pieces to create your  own unique design. Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor.

Please note that the instructor for this class will walk kids to Sunnyside Playground to hold class and then walk kids back to Sunnyside.  You must sign a waiver OK’ing this in order to register for the class.
Get ready to dive into Bay Area science! Meet local animals face-to-face. Learn about who lives in the bay, what makes our earth quake and shake, San Francisco architectural icons, and how to conserve and restore our unique home. In this hands-on science and art program we will build a Golden Gate suspension bridge model, learn about the physics of cable cars, study Elephant Seals and Grey Whales, investigate the East Bay Hills firestorm, pan for gold, find out what happened to the San Francisco Garter Snake, and get to know all about the natural history of your own back yard. Additional Information (new flyer coming soon)

Wizbots serves kids of all levels, from novice to seasoned practitioner, in the art and science of Imagineering. Classes combine sophisticated programming and robotics components (LEGO MINDSTORMS® NXT) with low-tech arts, crafts and building materials to provide an outstanding range of design possibilities for young innovators. All programs engage kids in product design, tech challenges, team games, and open-ended creativity.

Mad Science

Different quarters may have different themes, examples are:
Crazy Chemworks: Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works. Students will learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results, explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes, create and test slime, probe the properties of light, melt metal in boiling water, and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice.
Phenomenal Phsyics: Gravity… Inertia… Centripetal Force… who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun? We’ll experience these awesome forces, learn about the atoms and molecules and build some cool devices. Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch, and levitate ping-pong balls in defiance of gravity. Learn how combinations of shapes like triangles, cylinders, and arches make sturdy homes, bridges, and skyscrapers. And then explore the science of flight. Take home something at the end of each class such as a skyhawk plane, silly putty, and a drag racer.
