Science at Sunnyside

Sunnyside prides itself on its strong science focus.  Our students begin to study the scientific method in kindergarten, and a variety of partnerships and programs ensure that our kids continue to receive a rich science education throughout their years at our school.  Over the next two years, Sunnyside will be shifting to the Next Generation Science Standards.

Curriculum and Partnerships

  • FOSS Kits: Our K-5 science curriculum is based on the FOSS Program and includes 6-8 week activity-based learning modules focused on Life, Physical, and Earth science.
  • SEP Partnership: Through UCSF's Science and Health Education Partnership, UCSF scientists come into Sunnyside classrooms to teach scientific concepts to our students.
  • San Francisco State Partnership: SF State University Science Students perform hands-on experiments in the classroom with Sunnyside students.
  • Mission and Excelsior Science Workshops: Our students participate in many activities sponsored by MSW, including field trips, classroom visits, and Whale Week!

Events & Field Trips

Math and Science Day: A full day of math and science activities!  Teachers set up experiments and activities in each classroom, and kids rotate through the rooms, exploring a new concept in each room.
Science Fair: Every spring, students in grades 3-5 participate in a school science fair, presenting the results of their experiments for all to enjoy. Take a look at the projects presented during the 2015 event.
Field Trips: Sunnyside students go on a variety of field trips to take advantage of the many scientific resources available in the city. They include  the Farallones Marine Sanctuary in Crissy Field, California Academy of Science,  Randall Museum, Exploratorium, neighborhood tree walk, and the nearby Glen Canyon.
Rube Goldberg Day: Students celebrate the Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist known for crazy inventions in his pictures. See examples of the kids' inventiveness from 2015.
