Student Life

The students of Sunnyside come together in many ways.

Our school climate fosters a safe, respectful, and responsible atmosphere.  Whether that’s in the lunchroom, on the blacktop, in the drop-off zone, or when working together in teams or on projects.

School Climate

The foundation of our school behavior policy is that all members of the community follow these Three Big Rules and that all students, staff, and visitors should be treated with dignity and respect. We use our compassion and believe that follow-through with clear, fair, and consistent consequences and work around restoring relationships harmed by misbehavior are needed to ensure learning empathy and students embracing their place in our community. Our full Climate & Discipline Policy—including our work with Restorative Practices, our non-discrimination policy, and Balanced Scorecard/Site Plan—is available by request from the office.
To foster a safe, welcoming environment Sunnyside has the following three big rules:

Lunch & Recess

All Sunnyside students eat lunch with their grade in the auditorium/cafeteria and then go outside for recess. Students who purchase meals (breakfast: $1.50, lunch: $3) are served fresh food prepared by Oakland’s Revolution Foods.

How to order

Fill out the form you receive at the beginning of the year, pick one up in the office, or apply online at https://www.schoolcafe.com/. Every family should fill out an application, whether you want school lunch or not. School funding depends on these forms.

How to pay

Cash - Students bring in $3, which is collected by teachers during attendance roll call each morning.

Online -  Set up your student’s account at www.mypaymentsplus.com and pay for meals in advance.
There is a charge for payment by credit card, but you can track your child's food purchases here.

Check - Students bring a check made out to "Student Nutrition Services" directly to the cafeteria worker. Checks should include student's name, ID, and room number.

Drop Zone

Picture
You can park (legally, please!) and walk your children into school or drop them off at the drop zone on Hearst Street, staffed by parent volunteers, 5th grade volunteers, and sometimes the principal. It is located on the south side of Hearst Street between Foerster and Edna Streets, at the entrance to the schoolyard. Rules for conduct in the drop zone are regularly communicated to parents.

To pick your child up after school, please park and walk to your child's classroom. Older students (4th and 5th) can sign themselves out if a parent arranges in advance with their teacher.

Sports

Sunnyside parents and volunteers have organized several school teams, particularly in soccer, as part of the YMCA League and SF Vikings League. Parents setting up school or class teams will communicate by ParentSquare to invite players.

The Ray

Sunnyside is the only elementary school in the district to produce its own literary journal. It consists of art, poetry, and prose by Sunnyside students.
